I"m not sure exactly how pitch counts serve zero purpose, but we use them and will continue to use them as a tool. We track our kids and how much they throw, pitch counts come in great when looking at how much the kid has actually thrown throughout the year. Lets be honest though, most of these kids that we are talking about are overused and it is simply a coach wanting to win and parents allowing it to happen. I'm not talking about a specific team at all but we have all seen it. It is an ugly fact of travel baseball. I don't agree with it but it is where we are. The only way to prevent it is for tournaments to enforce a pitching policy that doesn't allow wiggle room. Perfect game, arguably the biggest name in tournament baseball right now, enforces strict policies.....almost too strict but it forces you to plan and have to coach, use your pitchers and their numbers wisely. But it can be done. The issue is when you get into the longer double elim tourneys. But again, everyone is under the same rules as you are.

Actually PG, in my opinion seems to push kids to their max pitch limit or keep them under 20 pitches in a day to be able to pitch the following day for a weekend tournament. I think USSSA does a decent job of pitch restrictions. Most tournaments go by innings, which is not an accurate buttessment of the pitcher. Kids can throw 3 innings at 36 pitches and need to be taken out, although most tournaments don’t want to have someone at each game to keep pitch counts instead of innings because it’s another volunteer needed. PG, you can throw 2 kids 85 pitches for pool play games and have the rest of your kids available for Sunday? But if you pitch 2 kids both 42 pitches a game on Saturday, u lost 4 kids available to pitch Sunday.

Good grief....child abuse. Kid throws 121 in 2 days. 0 d 1 d 2 d 3 d 4 d 11-12 max 85 1-20 21-35 36-50 51-65 66+ Coaches, take note of the above USA Baseball/MLB Guidelines, and take care of your kids. It’s mind boggling no parents there ever say anything or leave to go to another team. Who ever posted this is an idiot..... The tournament was 4 days long. Pitch count is archaic! If a kid pitches 10-12 pitches and then the team hits for 10 minutes and the pitchers has a rest period of 10 minutes then he can pitch all day. What is the difference between just throwing 50-100 times in warm ups and pitching in a game 10-12 pitches every 15 minutes. Stupidity on the part of the person here! Just wow! This person doesn’t know anything about baseball and is simply going off what they think they have heard from someone else. Pitch count is the most archaic way to track proper growth in a pitcher and if anyone thinks that this person is intelligent........... then just wow! Educate yourself to the 21st century. We have real analytics and real data. You don’t have to guess or Regurgitate 30. Year old thinking

Cameo...you should never coach kids. That's why a lot of these kids are unable to pitch in HS, because they have arm injuries at that age because of the overuse in the younger ages.

Cameo.....Cooperstown this week. Elkridge. Monday kid throws 90 pitches (12 year old) comes back to throw 42 Wednesday. One day rest. This is ok with you??? If that was a HS coach they would have been fired. How come coaches can't follow the pitch limits that are instilled for 17-18 year old kids with 10-12 year olds. Really sad. These kids are damaging more than you know now.

Not here to defend Elkridge but while probably the highlight of many kids youth baseball careers and generally just a fun experience for everyone Cooperstown is plain and simple bad news when it comes to pitching. Many teams will play 8-10 games from Sunday to Thursday. At 1000 dollars a kid tough bringing extra pitchers and even if in budget good luck bringing 14 kids and having kids sit in Cooperstown. Even teams that pitch10 kids will wind up overusing someone if they advance a couple rounds in playoffs.
