I am looking for turf to install in my outside batting cage. 15'x 55'. I would rather have one piece but would do sections. Does anyone have any info on this? Also do I install on top of stone dust and then stake down with sod stakes or ?
I am also in the process of replacing my small portable mound with either dirt mound or a larger game portable, any ideas on this?

I am looking for turf to install in my outside batting cage. 15'x 55'. I would rather have one piece but would do sections. Does anyone have any info on this? Also do I install on top of stone dust and then stake down with sod stakes or ? I am also in the process of replacing my small portable mound with either dirt mound or a larger game portable, any ideas on this? I built a 120' x 120' turf infield in 2017-8, in a field of dreams field that I built in my yard. I work in construction, own an excavator, so I was looking for a challenge. FOUND IT. I looked on line, found there were two types of athletic turf, the thick rubber backed (all in one) that is typical for indoor applications as well as driving range mats, and the type used for outdoor applications like you see at your local high school football fields, which by itself is much lighter but the system relies on a sand/rubber fill that has to be added and spread. I bought the latter type turf (from a salvage contractor who salvaged it from the Georgia Dome when that was demolished) in the Fall of 2017. The roles were 15 ft wide, and were really 5 yd horizontal chunks of the dome football field with hashmarks and all, There are regional re-sellers of similar used turf. And there are local specialty contractors that will furnish and install both types. Mine was really a major project. I installed a crown in the infield subbase, and then installed two inches of stone drainage, before setting the turf, and then nailed with long soil nails through the drainage layer, finally adding the sand/rubber fill. It works great 4 years later, but it was a ton of work. My original field anticipated 70' bases like Cooperstown, and I thought 120' would be enough for future HS workouts, but didn't spend as much time thinking about HS as I should. It is now usable but tight for a 90 ft infield. You might consider looking at 15 x 75 for your cage, so it will be used a lot for HS ball and 60'6" distances. For your cage, I would recommended the thick rubber backed turf you see at the indoor cages, and that you see at driving range tee boxes. It is much, much easier to install (and outgrow lol), lol. The upfront cost is more than 2-3 times as much, but its worth it for a cage. Some kind of drainage system that moves the water away quickly is important. Best of luck.
