We hear the term “Daddy Ball” used very freely around here.
We also see the word Development thrown around.
Recruiting-smfh
Daddy ball is when a coaches son is given the spot to start routinely over another kid when the other kid is clearly better.
Many time you hear people say this or that’s daddy ball. Have you sat back and looked at how the team is made up? Maybe your son is better than the coaches at what ever position, but your son is also the strongest option at another position.
Development- how many teams are truly teaching their players about what it takes to succeed on the big diamond? Is your coach teaching the players with man on 2nd or 3rd and less than 2 outs the ball needs to be put on the right side to move the runner? (Also known as situational hitting) is your coaches teaching your catchers how to call the game, and discussing what and why they called in a certain count? Are your coaches teaching the players that you can be the absolute best player in the state, but when your lazy walk off the field, play with pompous attitude a college scout will scratch you off their list?
Final one is recruiting- every year every team in the state holds tryouts. Mainly because Karen or Jim aren’t happy with what their son Johnny’s playing time was at their previous team. Baseball community is small and parents talk. Good teams want the best players possible, no team is going to turn down a great player if their available, unless they can be a cancer to the current roster. If your worried about your players playing time or they may be replaced, go get them an instructor that will help develop their weaknesses.
Let’s not forget that these coaches coaching kids from 7-18 years of age are mostly volunteer. If you don’t like how the team is ran, simply do what so many other Male Karen’s have done and start their own team, since every parent feels their little Johnny should be playing travel baseball, hense the reason why baseball has become a multi billion dollar industry.
Great Post. Finally something worth talking about on this page. So many new teams in 12u this year
