Greetings from 123 Sesame Street!
Bert checking in and soon....Ernie joining as we kick off a thread for all things College Baseball. Several D2, D3 and Jucos are now in season with D1 dudes start next Friday. Our goal is to share positive collegiate information and data on current collegiate players and teams that have a connection with the Maryland area. We will provide facts and certainly some opinions...welcoming all to add to the thread.
The journey to get to a college program is a grind....to sustain valuable playing time and a positive outcome at the collegiate level is incredibly difficult, regardless of level!
For 2021, post-covid after 2 years, collegiate rosters remain large. D1 roster limits are 40 with planned gradual decreases over the next two years back to 35. Noticing several D2 rosters over 40 men resulting from the unprecedented numbers from the 2021 NCAA transfer portal. It remains difficult to understand rosters/years of eligibility since 2020 was a non-counter and 2021 for D3 and Juco players was all a free year of eligibility.
Ernie and I will dive into that subject as we venture forward but for now....join in and share great posts in this College Baseball thread.

Excited as this season gets moving. Can’t wait to see how the local kids make the jump to their new worlds.
Moms and dads - sit tight since most of you are just getting started on this roller coaster called amateur baseball. I hope each and every one of you get to watch proudly as your sons go to battle.

Bert,
Lets start by recognizing some big time dudes in the area. That 6-4 Wahoo slinger from Loyola absolutely lit it up last postseason for the Cavs. It was thrilling to watch him shove 5 innings vs the Gamecocks in the regional in only his second start. Crazy movement on his fastball with low to mid 90s velo! Then he follows up his regional performance with another shove of 5.2 innings vs. Dallas Baptist...one of the best hitting teams in the country! Two appearances in the CWS so Matt Wyatt has arrived. Word is weekends will be flooded with area and crosscheckers to watch Matt do his thing. On track as a weekend guy and high draft pick. Going out on a little limb but Matt Wyatt may be the best arm from the area since early 2000s with Gavin Floyd from MSJ? Gavin went 1st round to the Phillies and finished not too long ago with his MLB career. Am I missing anyone from the past 20 years or his Wyatt the next high draft from the area! Cavs also have Alex Greene from Dematha, trying to get some stats as a sophomore after no action as a freshman. Getting good PT as a freshman in a P5 program is sooooooo difficult. Got to physically transform yourself, grind everyday and when your moment comes....take full advantage....or the moment may pbutt you bye.....

Spot on Ernie - Wyatt surely is the ONE to watch from this area. Moms and dads - follow Wyatt, see the talent + the work ethic + battle tested environment so you can ask yourself, is my Johnny at that level??
Ernie - who else from Baltimore/ Metro area do we expect to have an impact this ‘22 season?? So exciting

Ah yes, #2 prospect in our Sesame Street top 10 goes to Tyler Locklear. He’s a recent grad of Archbishop Curley, killing it at all levels. Cookie Monster believes Locklear will be one of the first corner infielders taken in this years draft.
Thanks Ernie - great call!!!

Travel south on 95, make a left on 64 at Rocky Mount and slide into Greenville to watch another killer corner monster in Josh Moylan. Josh only barreled 6 in 21, hit .310 but started 58 games as a freshman on a perennial team that lands in a regional. 6-4, athletic, lefty and a Freshman All-American who can not only mash, but can pick 'em up and put 'em down! His first collegiate homer vs. Duke last year had to be 450. So cool watching that video.
Given how close ECU is to this area, if anyone has an off weekend this spring, the ECU baseball fan experience rivals many of the deep south P5 schools. They average @ 3,000 on the weekends and the student body crazies that surround the outfield are second to none. You do NOT want to be an opposing outfielder in the park!
Also, really noteworthy is Bowie native and brother of Spalding head coach Joe Palumbo, Jeff Palumbo has been on staff with the Pirates for multiple years. This guy played at George Mason and jumped into coaching right after his player days were over. You think advancing as a collegiate player is a tough path...try making a living as a collegiate coach! Jeff bounced from Mason to UCF to VCU to ECU, advancing along the way. Tough to navigate a family when your career path needs flexibility.
Ya know, the Palumbo family could be one of "first families" of Maryland baseball!
They lost a couple close ones to Vandy in the Supers last year so they are knocking on the door and a trip to Omaha would be superb for Josh and Jeff as local boys!

Defending D3 national champs Salisbury opens up with a DH sweep of Alfred State. The Gulls on the shore are primed for another run!
Harford CC went down to SC and handled a very physical Flo-Dar a juco club and won their 3rd yesterday. Tom Eller really built a program over the years which has not lost its stride. They recruit a lot of players from the Mid Atlantic and many do advance to play D1 so the right Juco path remains a viable option for high school guys.

Well done Ernie -
Your early season coverage is right on! Local D3s on their way - can’t wait for the big boys to get moving next week. Josh Moylan with some love yesterday, I’m gonna mention one of my personal favorites, Ryan Wright. Wright is a ‘21 grad of Loyola Blakefield under the tutelage of Mike Kelly. Wright is a 6.6 60 runner, perfect for top of the lineup fireworks as he begins his freshman season at Marymount University. Look for big things from him this season - can’t wait to see which freshman will make big impacts this year.
Cookie Monster also a huge fan of Ryan Wright!

We mention a couple D3 programs but as you know, MD is a little light on D2 baseball programs except for Frostburg St. Need to bounce one state north and watch the programs of the PSAC. Perennial D2 powers usually send a participant to the D2 World Series in Cary. Close to our state is Millersville. John Sheehan always has those 6-2 to 6-4 arms that sit upper 80s to low 90s and are always in the mix. Take a short ride to Lancaster one weekend and catch the Marauders play...an impressive brand of ball

Sorry Ernie but I’m a warm weather guy. I prefer to stay south of the border and watch dudes battle it out…
Cookie Monster also hates the cold.
D1baseball.com is a great place to see the d1 dynamic play out…. No longer need PBR now that many are gonna be truly tested as season kicks off - let’s see who this seasons dudes are. It’s time for these kids to put their money where their mouths are - no more pull downs or exit velo - TIME TO GET ON THE FIELD AND EXECUTE…
SEC and ACC will hit the ground running. Everyone else is chasing.
Bert OUT

So true Bert....Pull downs, max FB velo, launch angles and EV does NOT necessarily translate to collegiate success. To reference PBR and that huge database they provide, we know that @ 50% of all D1 guys that have been on PBR's top 50 list, have enjoyed limited success at the current D1 college....IF THEY ARE STILL at the college. The transfer rate is incredible. Do the research.... That research proves that the dudes who are D1 successful...really are dudes and should be applauded

Terps travel to Waco, Texas and take on the Baylor Bears next weekend. Had a solid "bubble" season last year playing on Big10 clubs going 28-16 and 2-2 in the Greenville Regional. Senior Max Costes hopes to return to his freshman form when he belted 15. Max hit for average last year at .310 but only knocked 5 out. We have seen him "heat up" can carry the club offensively so hopes for Max to have a stellar senior season. Anxious to watch the careers of Travis Garnett (Indian Creek) and Noah Mrotek (Spalding) launch as Freshman. Shoutout to the 2021 Grad Landon Terp OF, Randy Bednar, hitting .317, 7 HR in 33 games. Outstanding college career and spending some time in the Mariners org.

Towson opens up with two great weekend southern trips....Miami for 4 this weekend followed by "Call'in Baton Rouge" the following vs. LSU and Southern. A tough 8 game opener but really great venues to play college baseball. They opened up last year losing by 3 TDs and a 2 point conversion to WCU and got hammered the first 1/3 of their schedule before playing near .500 in conference and a quick 0-2 trip in the CAA tournament. Coach Tyner turned over his pitching coach and volly and word has it the staff has improved the culture for the Tigers. Matt is a good dude and working hard to build that program without many resources that other programs have in the CAA. Good amount of upperclbuttmen with Srs. Nick Brown and Trent Gast-Woodard (Curley), Jr. Pete Marchinek (Calvert Hall) and Jr. Bryce Frederick (Dulaney). Couple SJC arms with elder pen guy Jake Pecilunas and freshman Max Simpson. Touching base on transfers earlier, Nate Nablolz (his uncle Chris was an all-time Tiger arm in the early 90s and cuz Eli was a baller in the mid 20-teens), continues the Nabolz lineage with his transfer from ECU. Also, pay attention to OF Chandler Castleberry, a multi-tool guy that transferred from Anderson University, SC....as he has caught the eye of a few MLB scouts. Weekend 3 has the Tigers heading to Greensboro to battle UNCG, the home of another local success story from Patterson Mill...Junior Austin Koehn. Austin was a weekend guy for the Spartans last year with 15 starts, 4-3 record and 5.11 ERA. He certainly has enjoyed a productive experience at UNCG, Hope for his continued success in the SoCon. BTW, UNCG opens up at the ever friendly confines of South Carolina so Austin has to deal with those frat boys heckling him this weekend!

Great job Ernie
Lots of great info here capturing the upward trajectory of Towson University. Cookie Monster and I are equally interested in UMBC - how do they match up with its in-state rival. Is it a rivalry?
Any incoming freshman expected to impact the local schools?? Cookie Monster isn’t as interested in the 20-somethings as he is the young guns kicking off this weekend.
Love the Towson schedule - playing monsters now pays off big time.
