Been doing a lot of thinking. At what point to you make the decision to have your son try out for a different team if you are unsure of where the organization is going? If your son makes "said team or teams" what are the best things to look for within an organization? The main "concern" is who can help my son reach his full potential with a good coaching staff. The other tough part of the decision, is being a small part of the organization, and helping with the team. Any feedback is appreciated.

Start with what are the coach’s backgrounds and experience. Next determine what their goals are for the kids. Field access is always hard to find so make sure the organization has plenty of fields for practice times.

Make sure the coach played either d1 baseball or pro ball.

so what if you can't find either within a 30 mile radius. I hope my son can make it to high school ball for 1 of the top MIAA teams, but realistically, it's a matter of getting the best out of 9U-13U

Maybe it's more of a moral question of when to say good bye and move on if your son makes a better team, and leaving an organization, for the betterment of your son

Find a cool dad that played in high school and can rake the mound like no other. Also, ask him if he has some old Tom Emanski VHS videos.

If the team is better due to coaching then I think an honest conversation with the coach is all a coach can ask for. If the team is better because they have better players and has nothing to do with coaching then it looks like trophy hunting. Is your son progressing as a player? Is the team in a competitive league now compared to the new team? What does the new team offer that his current team doesn’t have?

I think the only way my son progresses is by leaving me as a coach/helper. The team is basically an in house team playing travel ball with the exception of a few players. As far as competitive league no, but we lost, the potential future team won. The new team could offer a different mind set of players and parent relationship where baseball is the main focus amongst player and family, and there is no other sport involved. Also things to take into consideration, is a family environment where everyone is focused on baseball and the kids can grow together.

Guest Dad, ask your son where he wants to play and follow his vision. Maybe he wants to play on a team with his friends, maybe he wants to play on a team that will challenge him. Ultimately the decision should be his, and you just try and support his decision. Good luck and I hope you find a team that will benefit your son.
