Who plays 54/80 in the state of Maryland at 13U. Setting kids up who are in 8th grade to fail as freshman. How so? Making the HS baseball team is not a hard thing to do and spending a season playing 54/80 actually makes more sense at 13u, which 7th grade not 8th if you do it right, than an immediate jump to 60/90 after 12u/6th grade. I've seen too many arm injures at all positions due to increase in field size. 54/80 for 13u/7th grade, then 60/90 for 4u/8th grade makes sense.

Maryland should switch to teams arranged by clbutt starting at 13u. Back in the 1980s in Texas we played 54/80 in 7th grade and 60/90 in 8th grade.
The transition from the 70 to the 90’ field Is too big for the kids who haven’t hit puberty yet. This is why 13u baseball at 60/90 can be painful. Kids barely breaking 60mph on the mound is no good for the transition and hitters timing.
Bring back Pony Ball for 7th graders! This will also help avoid the team blowup that happens when the team is 50/50 7th and 8th graders.

ah fantastic idea! this will also eliminate coaches discriminating players that havent hit puberty yet and arent as tall/big as others. 7th grade should be a true transition and help kids that havent grown yet. It will keep confidence levels high and avoid injuries from trying to force the big field on kids. Other states do it and see success at high levels.

When many of us were kids we went from 46/60 to 60/90 so at least 50/70 at 11/12 slightly helps. I agree Pony 54/80 is a good idea however I don’t think it will happen. Not enough 60/90 fields as it is and don’t see the urgency for organizations to retrofit any just to play Pony.

Personally I feel kids should get as much time on the 90 before high school.
They play 54/80 then go to high school ball their behind. Lucky my boy gets 2 years before high school on the 90 before high school and feel it’s an advantage compared to a player who only gets 1 year.

Agree that going from 54/80 in 8th grade to 60/90 not ideal but if it was an option for a 7th grader I still think Pony would be a good option. Especially for smaller kids and kids that are not your impact players. i know some kids who are older (only played one year on the big field). Small sample size but saw no disadvantage. I remember when my kids went from 50/70 to 60/90. Biggest issue for their teams were 1.Pitching - the kids that could really pitch were fine but the borderline kids had control issues. 2.Bats - most kids used -5 at 13u and BBCOR at 14u. Going from a -8 on a small field to -5 on a big field is almost as daunting as going to a BBCOR from a -5. Also the sad truth is that there will be kids who were very good players up until 12u that no matter hard they work or the coaching they get that will just not be as good on the big field depending on their physical make-up. Conversly - ( I will not name names) but I know of some kids that are true impact players high school age who were average a few years ago.
