My son will be a freshman at Spalding in the fall. Does anyone know if he will have to play with the High School team in the fall and summer? He loves the team that he plays for now but dosent want to have it held against him if he dosent play with the High School team in the summer.

Don’t think a coach can make him play.Question is will it be held against him. Only someone from Spalding in same situation can answer. In recent years I have seen many private and public schools having
Summer/fall teams. A few sometimes mix in few kids from other schools for optics some flat out have teams of kids just from their school. Years ago I don’t think the schools coaches could be involved think that rule is out the window. I don’t think this practice is bad in theory(having HS kids playing together not bad) However when kids feel pressured to play on a team or when the coach profits from running an outside team this can be problematic.

Old timer- they actually can make you look at St. John’s in DC. There was a law suit over it and I believe they won as Coach Gibbs explained it all before the kids decided on that school.
I know several people who go to spalding. Some played for the Cavs some didn’t.
If you look at this past summer they had several kids who played on other teams not for the API Cavs, then the vast majority play for API.
I see it in 2 lights.....:
1. Your with your highschool coach and team all year, the bond is built. Your coach knows your strengths and weaknesses and can really help address them.
2. Another set of eyes another voice may be what you need from a different coach.

2. Another set of eyes another voice may be what you need from a different coach. So long as said set of eyes is knowledgeable/reputable, this is the way to go. If not, go back to #1.

My son recently graduated from Spalding. All I can say is if you don’t play for them in the summer then you aren’t someone that they want to play for them in the spring. Good luck with your other team. #cavs

Why wouldn’t you want to play for a team that’s linked to your HS team? Also, if you’re in the mix of kids they want there , you will know where you’re playing in the fall.
Why use a fake name? Scared the coach will see it and say “ it’s ok, you can play else where, your son isn’t on our radar anyway. “ ?

Kids should be able to play summer ball wherever they want without fear that if they don’t play with their HA coach, it won’t hurt them during the HS season. Some of the summer teams are much stronger and play more competitive tournaments down south where the scouts hang out. I think what Spalding and St. John’s are doing is hurting some kids that have the potential to play high level showcase ball in the summer.

Did everyone read the original post? His kid wants to stay with his current team. We can debate whether playing for API or his current team would be better but that’s not the issue.
If Spalding holds it against kids that don’t play for API the dad needs to explain to his son that if he stays with his team it could affect his playing time at Spalding.
I know nothing about the Spalding coach but I do know HS coaches want to win. I have to believe they would play the best 9 regardless of who played where in the summer.

Yea, they are hurting the kids. Lol. Ok. Have you seen the committed list of kids? They play in the same tournaments. Unless you are on the true National Canes, DB, 5 Star your travel team isnt getting any special invite to anything. Also, if you are a D1 player you are a D1 player. There is more exposure now than in any other time for youth and Hs baseball

Parents that think they know more then the high school coach with a proven track record.
Go ahead and do what you think is best based on your irrelevant travel team coaches advice.
Look back in 10 years and read this post again.

let's look at this from a different perspective. you have an incoming freshman joining the high school fall and summer team. Said fall/summer team has 20 kids on the roster.
is it better for the a fringe freshman player to:
A: play with another travel team not focused on HS rosters to get more playing time? B: join HS fall/summer team and play (maybe) 4 innings in a weekend? C: play with other travel team but be available for HS fall and summer team when truly needed?
My answer would be C, which is the best scenario IF TRULY FOCUSING ON PLAYER DEVELOPMENT.

If you are scared/worried of 4 innings playing time, good luck in the Spring. “Truly” needed is doubtful.

I dam sure wouldn’t jeopardize it by going to play for a different team in the summer. The bottom 5 on the Hs team are probably very easy to replace and those guys should probably do everything they can to stay on the top 20. Including playing 4 inn a weekend in the summer with the HS team.
