Let’s look at the new names added to travel teams these days.
1) National
2) Academy
3) Elite
4) Premier
5) Platinum
6) Showcase (under 16U)
7) Gold
8) Prospects
How can everyone be elite? Any team can play in PG, pbr, triple crown, etc. They will take money from the worst rec team. They don’t care.
If you play for a team with any of these names in it question yourself what are they selling?!? It’s real sad the amount of money people are spending on travel baseball. Does your Org breakdown where your costs are going by line item? Exposure at 13u or 11u…..Exposure to whom? The big 4 Orgs have 3-5 teams at every age group that support the older National teams. Is that where you want your money going? How is it possible that all these teams are coached by knowledgeable, experienced coaches? Did they play beyond HS, were they coached by knowledgeable people? Do your homework and don’t fall into the money trap going on. Paying $3k a year also doesn’t mean equal playing time. Find a good fit on a team and pay the extra money saved on a qualified instructor.
Many HS coaches will tell you most kids have poor mechanics, iq, and actions when coming into HS. At that age it’s too difficult to change major body movement issues. Stop worrying about playing 60-70 games at 10 and focus on getting qualified instruction. Qualified instruction isn’t “keeping your head on the ball” in a 15 pitch bp session at practice by the coach.
I see all these tryout flyers out now. Many kids will jump ship because of the parents. The sales ads in these flyers are comical. Many coaches lie about their backgrounds. Does it matter? Yes, it starts with integrity. Don’t be afraid to ask questions to the coaches even though you really, really want your son to make the team. There are roughly 30 travel teams per age group in Maryland.
I hope this resonates with at least one person and I will feel better.
