Apologies for the long thread in advance but this is it from me....
First I wanted to shout out to the players on the Eastern Shore of MD on this post. They produce good corn, good crabs and great ball players over there - we had 2 intense battles with Shockers Gaylor (first time we have met in all these years...great game and great coaching) and Aces East (20 home runs in one game, 10 each, yowsa it's time for the BBCOR!) in the last 2 weekends. Felt a little like Cooperstown rebooted for those who missed in 12u....a home run fest at the 13u level by all 3 teams.
Second I want to say so long to my fellow coaches on this thread. I am heading to Florida with family in tow in 2 weeks. It's been fun and a great learning experience coaching against all of you guys for the last 12 years (dating back to my oldest of 3 boys). I appreciate all of you for the time and effort you put into the sport of baseball and trying to teach the boys the game as well as something about life. To the one guy coached my youngest son Daniel as a guest in the last few years, Dan Leon, I can only pray that we find a coach who runs a program/team and treats people the way you do when we land in FL. To Jeff Scott who will probably never see this thank you for coaching with me, teaching me, and taking care of my boys as well when we had to divide ages years ago.
Coaches, I hope that all of your players have great success moving forward. I have watched players replicate their coaches (the good, the bad, the ugly) for many years, including this year, and it's either going to be a pleasurable memory or a haunting thought as we all get later on in life...depending on what they are replicating. They look up to their coaches, whether we think they do or not, and they replicate. The best thing you can give to your future MLB star or the kid who is going to be a future lawyer, congressman, carpenter, plumber, brain surgeon, etc is the wisdom of how to treat others, both friend and friendly foe, and how to have fun and live in a way that is joyful and peaceful regardless of the circumstance you are in. Encourage them to never quit or their teammates or leaders and never degrade another human being regardless of the circumstance they may find themselves in or how they may feel they have been wronged. And of course to overcome adversity with hard work. Do not run from a challenge. Conquer it with hard work and humility. It always pays off. Even if it is not necessarily in the moment or situation where you want the payoff to occur.
Last, I want to thank the Royals / Blue Sox families who have stuck it out with me and entrusted your players to my philosophy and style. The hard work they put in until the very end of this ride with me...running on fumes with those 9 or 10 guys at times...shows true heart and character. What the world needs is good strong leaders in the future, men of high integrity in the marketplace, in the social spaces, in the public sector - I hope some of them are leading the way when I am an old man and at the mercy! To the originals that gave me their best from day 1 - 7 years old until the end - Gav-O, Liam, Daniel - you guys are warriors. To the others who joined shortly thereafter or within the past year or two and learned how to be a teammate and friend until the end - you guys rock as well. To the others who have allowed me to coach your player at one time or another, I thank you for entrusting me with that privilege whether 1 year or 7 years and I hope that as they navigate life they can reflect on the principles we have tried to abide by and there is something small they can glean from it at one time or another. Ron, Cory, Mike - I cannot overstate how much I appreciate you guys and what you have been to me and more importantly to Daniel. He looks up to you guys and loves you all. Herz...thank you for the year and zero agenda other than baseball for your son and wanting to help the rest of the boys in any way you could.
Thank you all for a great experience coaching baseball in Maryland as well as giving my own children some of the best competition and life lesson/experience that one could hope for. I wish you all the best of success in everything that you do...and for those who have my info please stay in touch as/when appropriate. I will always be a fan...go O's!
