Gents,
Nor the two guys in question or Juan are blasting the dialogue regarding College Baseball. They, like others, are welcome to join in. TBH, it would be interesting for their commentary.....

Someone should do the math and question them on it. Its doubtful they are still in business without showing expense reports to parents.

Someone should do the math and question them on it. Its doubtful they are still in business without showing expense reports to parents. The math has been done, but when you ask them they tell you that they don't give expense reports. Since they aren't a 503(c) non profit, they won't show it to you and they are still in business.
Here is the truth about Shawn Miller and the Mid Atlantic Dirtbags:
Shawn told the coach he had to carry 14 players. The coach didn't want to carry that many but Shawn said he had to.
The cost for each player was $1,600 and that didn't include the uniform.
Also head coaches kid gets to play for free. Shouldn't be any problem with that. Head coach was told that the buttistant coaches kid gets to play at half price, so they would of paid $800. No problem with that either. Two days before the first tournament head coach calls Shawn and ask him why the buttistant coaches kid isn't on the Perfect Game roster and Shawn says he hasn't paid. Shawn says the buttistant coaches kid has to pay the full $1,600, so he went ahead and paid the remaining $800.
So the total taken in for 13 kids was $20,800
Team was suppose to play in 6 tournaments: 9/11-9/12 Perfect Game September Showdown (Bristol, VA) Cost $340 9/18-9/19 Calvert Hall Tournament (Towson, MD) Cost $750 9/24-9/26 Perfect Game Central PA Fall Elite Championship (Palmyra, PA) Cost $1,300 10/8-10/11 WWBA Northeast Fall Championship (Atlantic City, NJ) Cost $1,545 10/23-10/24 Impact Baseball Fall Championship (Burlington, NC) Cost $875? 10/30-10/31 Perfect Game Spooktacular Slam (Bristol, VA) Cost $340
Total cost for tournaments $5,150
Team didn't play in final tournament because they wanted to play in a different tournament and Shawn said there was no money in the account to switch to the other tournament. The tournament they wanted to play in was $1,000 and the tournament they originally were scheduled to play in was $340.
So the total player fees taken in were $20,800 minus the $4,810 is $15,900. We figured that $600 per player would be split between the Dirtbags in North Carolina and go to Shawn Miller so that equals $7,800. Taking out the cost of tournaments $4,810 and Dirtbags fee of $600 per player $7,800 leaves you with $8,190. Where did all that money go? They didn't pay for fields either.
They also had a player get hurt 3 days after paying the $1,600 fee. That player was ruled out by a doctor to not play all fall. The players parents ask for a refund and the Miller's refused to give a refund. The Dirtbags headquarters in North Carolina advised Shawn to give the refund but Shawn still refused. The Dirtbags headquarters said there was nothing they could do since Shawn was a franchisee of the Dirtbags. So that kid ending up being out $1,600 and never played a game with them in the fall.
Coach ask Shawn for baseballs and Shawn said there was no money in the account.
The way I look at it Shawn STOLE around $8,000 from that team.
I would advise anyone thinking about playing for the Mid Atlantic Dirtbags, DON'T DO IT!!

Gents, Nor the two guys in question or Juan are blasting the dialogue regarding College Baseball. They, like others, are welcome to join in. TBH, it would be interesting for their commentary..... I get paid by 5 star national and Jimmy Peyton. For the year we charge 250 for 5 star membership and 275 for uniforms. The cost per tournament is based on 16 players. 5 pos and 11 position players. But they take care of charging the kids. I think it was around 750 dollars per kid for 4 tournaments that we played. But I don’t have a report to give to anyone that’s on 5 star and Jimmy Peyton. I get paid for travel and hotel. 750 if it is Florida and 500 if it is Atlanta or closer. Not a lot of money but the only good thing is the experience for the kids is great. My job is to get more kids out of Maryland To be seen by scouts. And keep the low cost for tournaments. Money on food hotel and car rental is where the headcase for parents start. But I’m happy with the job we did last year. Hope to do it again this year maybe not with an org but on our own. So we keep it really low cost but at the same time good quality of players and parents. Good read

How do we get our money back? Civil suit? Hire a lawyer and I'm sure more families will come. What did they do that was illegal? Over charge you? Sounds like you should have done your homework before you paid them. They are a for profit business. Doesn’t make what they did morally right but not illegal.

Well when for profit companies over charge customers they refund those charges. Just because you are for profit doesn’t mean you can gouge consumers. We’ll let a judge in small claims determine. It will be worth the aggravation.

So has every team your son played on given you a budget for the season? My sons have played on many teams - some travel, some club, one affiliated with a workout facility with paid coaches, some affiliated with national orgs - and I’ve received season budgets from only 2 coaches. Transparency is not the norm.

I hate to say but I don’t think there is anything you can do other than learn from this experience. We went through it with another team, and it does stink. That is why this forum is good. If people share information about other teams’ fees, you get a sense of what is fair.

If you are trying out for a team, simply ask the coach how transparent they are with the budget. If they answer we never show the budget to anyone, there's a strong chance they are the type of coach who would mishandle funds and you should walk away.
In the end, let's draw one conclusion from this. Shawn and Ryan are true D-bags, uhhh, I mean Dirtbags.
