Rider gets the opening day win. Lee Lipinski, Calvert Hall 2015 Grad is an buttistant coach at Rider. Sr. Mike Willis (Gilman clbutt of 18) took the loss for the Hoyas. Willis was part of the Larry Sheets combo pitching rotation at Gilman. Larry would use Mike and 2 or 3 other arms every game MIAA game, throwing them once around the lineup and keeping pitch counts down, in order to have the staff available the next game. This strategy kept Gilman at the top of the MIAA for several years, getting the most out of his staff. Well done Larry Sheets.

Some RPI love for the Patriot League from yesterday... Army defeats Richmond 8-0 Navy over UMBC 10-9 Lehigh blanks Davidson 5-0 Holy Cross loses 2-1 to Troy and Bucknell losses a close one to Ball State 8-7
Not bad for a conference generally picked with an RPI on the back end.
Couple head scratcher upsets....
Illinois State (Luke Cheng So - Sherwood) goes into Arkansas in front of 10,000 and knocks off the Razorbacks and for all you Penn State fans, well they may be good in most sports but baseball isn't one of them... Monmouth, yes the whatever nickname they are, meets the Nittany Lions in Cary, NC and spanks them 10-1! Get ready CAA, Monmouth coming to your conference next year!
Penn State baseball....what are we talking about: 2021 18-24 2020 Covid 2019 22-27 2018 15-34 2017 18-37
This season marks the 9th season for head coach, Rob Cooper.
By PSU standards, stunning he still has a job. So, if one is asked who is the best program in the state of Pennsylvania, please don't say PSU...how about LaSalle at 32-21 in 2021...oh wait, they cancelled the program. The Hawks of St. Joseph do a good job every year....so does Millersville and Seton Hill...yep, (2) D2 programs from the PSAC that arguably could be considered in a dialogue for best college baseball programs in the Commonwealth of PA.
And watch out in a few years as Johnny Poss keeps building the Wilson Phoenix program up...year number 5 begins as JP started the program. 2019 21-13 2020 Covid 2021 21-6 2022....pushing 30 dubs
LOTS of top local talent for the Phoenix...Mike Marralle, Cam Nolet and Brandon Cook to name a few but our Metro area is a prime recruiting ground for them with likely 12-15 guys from the area. Good luck Phoenix....win the conference!

Tyler Locklear of VCU is making a strong statement to start the season. He’s hit 3 homers this weekend and still has another game tomorrow. File under things you love to see.

Playing college baseball and contributing successfully to one’s team is soooo difficult. Sometimes, especially at the D1 level, it’s Darwin’s theory of survival of the fittest. Players should be humble. Parents need to be humble and avoid pimping their kids up through constant social media!
I found out today of a D1 athletes decision to transfer to a Juco . Sorry for the player as we hope he resets his collegiate baseball Experience for the next couple years.
Karma to the father who by accounts on this board, is relentless on his social media posts about his son. Enjoy the journey as a father and fan or all kids playing, not just your son….

Ernie -
well said my best buddy. With all of the tweet ‘blessed’ announcements you’d think these kids found their forever home.
We continue to see this at a frantic pace - most with the mighty dream to pitch at the D1 level. I’m sorry, but we all know that’s the holy grail. D1 is not made for everyone - it’s made for dudes and dudes only. Transfer portal, ugh.
If your sons aren’t varsity everyday starters as high schoolers (including 9th grade) hear this LOUD AND CLEAR - D1 is not the answer. Landing at D1 is not the goal, playing is. If your sons don’t throw strikes in HS, they won’t in college - in turn they will never see the field. Many will argue that their kid never got the opportunity - he did, believe me he did.
Ask yourself what separates your son. If the answer is significant, great. If not, and your son is a good player with heart, battles and has good great, that’s terrific… but it’s not enough. All of theses kids are good, only some are dudes.
Sorry…. Cookie Monster isn’t happy about this post either…

Well, after that needed dose of reality does anyone have updates on how any of our Maryland Juco/D2/D3 guys are doing to start the season? While it’s not D1 these players have worked exceptionally hard and are still playing baseball after HS. Gotta love, respect, and celebrate that. They also set an example and pave the way for the younger guys coming up through the ranks.

Statler,
Absolutely appreciate the shoutout to all the levels of collegiate play. Some have been mentioned in earlier threads and worth a follow up. Thread has been a little disappointing as Bert and Ernie, plus yourself a couple times, seem to be the only ones posting....perhaps this forum does not have the interest in college baseball. Welcome more "traction" from others on this thread so we can broadly recognize accomplishments by more of our collegiate athletes from the area. Ya know Statler,if you take a look over the past couple years of players from this area that had the moment of "D1 tweet" and followed that path through D1 play...more than a majority are no longer in that progra...if playing at all. Interestingly, one would see more D2/D3 dudes successfully performing and contributing in their respective programs. We certainly know more "bling" is presented to the D1 athlete but if your time on the field is limited, how valued is that experience vs. the D2/D3 athlete who is penciled in the lineup everyday or who takes the mound every weekend?

Cookie Monster brings up interesting debate. Forget d1 vs d3 comparisons…. He wants to understand Power5 vs all others - these aren’t even games.
Power5 is pretty good baseball — the rest is just baseball.
Sorry

After watching Virginia - Cornell I’d agree, though ACC-Ivy might be an unfair example. There’s a significant gap. I have to say I’m very thankful to have so many games to watch, between ESPN+ and smaller school live streams. The MLB lockout is a bummer but might lead to more baseball fans paying attention to the college game.

Yes sir, I agree with that! Some baseball is better than no baseball.
You know, Cookie Monster also asked me about JUCO’s…. And I must say local Baltimore/ Metro JUCO’s can’t hold the jock of others across the country. Kudos to HCC for being the one local JUCO baseball team that may deserve some cred. The rest not so good.
Significant gaps across all levels.
