If anyone has used gear (bats, gloves, catchers gear, etc) and is looking to have their players or team donate to a good cause please reach out to me (brian@reynoldsfam.net). Over the last year we have visited Nicaragua a few times and are heading back down this summer. They are 2nd poorest country in Western Hemisphere and a lot of the boys on my team have donated old/outgrown/used items. I am working with the local "coaches" down there and we are developing a better condition for the kids to play in and compete and be consistently involved in building community efforts for the kids. Also partnering with local school and churches in their region to get the kids and adults into more education and faith based programs by reaching them through the sport of baseball. To give you an idea, they co-mingle kids ages 8 to 14 and have teams from various villages and towns compete. Talented, very raw, throwback style baseball -- and baseball is their national sport contrary to most Central American countries (soccer). This is also the roots of our beloved Dennis Martinez in Baltimore he was the first MLB player from this country. As of a year ago they shared 1 helmet per team, 1 set of catchers gear for the entire set of teams from various towns/villages, cardboard bases, no uniforms, a couple of bats, animals in the outfield are the lawnmowers, etc.
We've improved things over this past year and plan on doing more each time we go back, incrementally. My 11u son also gets to jump into the mix and play with these boys down there in competitive games which is awesome to watch as we all know baseball is a universal language especially among school aged children.
Anyone interested in getting involved in any way just let me know. There are also a lot of wonderful local programs for these types of things so please don't take away from anything or anyone else in doing this. Just reach out if you have extra or want to know more or be involved in this effort.
